Vertical Grinding for Large, Heavy Components
The Okamoto UGM 5VII is a vertical grinding machine built for large, heavy, and long workpieces that can be difficult to fixture horizontally. Its vertical configuration supports components such as large gears, reducer housings, construction equipment parts, and other challenging workpieces. The machine completes inner diameter, outer diameter, and end-face grinding in a single chucking, helping maintain straightness, cylindricity, and relationships between finished surfaces.
Multi-Surface Grinding in a Single Setup
Single-chucking capability allows the UGM 5VII to complete multiple grinding operations while reducing part handling between processes. A standard automatic tool changer and automatic turret rotation provide access to multiple grinding wheels without manual wheel changes. This multi-surface grinding configuration supports faster transitions between operations while expanding the range of features that can be finished on one machine.
Automated Wheel Positioning and Process Control
A Curvic coupling system provides precise wheelhead indexing at 0° and -30° positions for controlled multi-angle grinding. Scale feedback on the wheel infeed and longitudinal table axis supports accurate positioning, while a rotary dresser accommodates both small and large grinding wheels. Okamoto’s graphical user interface uses icon-based controls to simplify machine programming and operation across complex grinding cycles.
